Having an Internet connection while on a cruise has proven to be an
interesting experience over the years. Performance
has always been way below what you might expect at home as the system is
reliant on satellite connections and that makes the whole situation more
challenging. It’s not a fully reliable
service as it goes down quite a lot
Breakfast with a view! |
It’s always expensive but we realised on this cruise that we
had a lot of on board credit to spend.
With that in mind, a week or two before we were due to set off I spent
most of our on board credit on having a one-user Internet account on the ship. We thought it didn’t matter as we already had
a free drinks package and we didn’t expect to spend a lot on excursions.
It's a Sarah-type car on a tiny Caribbean island! |
And then we arrived on board – to see that we had paid more
for our Internet package than anything available to newcomers arriving on
board. So off we trotted to see the
Internet Manager to ask what was going on!

He explained that, barely a few days before, Celebrity had
changed their policy and were now offering two separate products – one for
basic emailing, web surfing etc and another for video streaming / movie
watching etc. A quick calculation
revealed that we could have two basic accounts for much less than we had paid
at home for one Internet account, so that was sorted.
What if I wanted one of those books on the top shelf?! |
So it was that, for the first time in our cruising history
we have had two Internet accounts on a cruise.
But it has meant that this cruise is one of the quietest we have
had. Mrs A who was at first reluctant
for us to have more than one account has been totally absorbed by her online
presence and I’ve had hardly a peep out of her!
